The Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) is a national,
charitable, non-profit organization, founded in 1985. LEAF works to advance
the substantive equality rights of women and girls in Canada through
litigation, law reform and public education using the Canadian Charter of
Rights and Freedoms.
Support LEAF’s efforts as the organization intervenes in the R. v.
Slatter case at the Supreme Court of Canada. LEAF will be working with a
coalition of organizations to protect the rights of women with disabilities in
sexual assault cases. In this case, the Ontario Court of Appeal ordered a new
trial in a sexual assault case after defence counsel raised concerns about the
woman’s reliability because her disability made her “suggestible”. LEAF is
arguing that generalizations and stereotypes about women labelled
with intellectual disabilities should not be used to assess the
reliability of their evidence. Help us protect the rights of all women.
