Madame Premier is Committed to Giving Back

Madame Premier is a small business with a social conscience. Our clothing line aims to shed light on the lack of women in politics, spark dialogue on the lack of representation and will hopefully inspire more women to get involved in politics and run for office.

We Are Advocating for Three Things

We need to talk about the lack of representation and the unique barriers that women experience when running for office to encourage positive change. We need greater representation from women in politics in order for elected officials to effectively represent the populations that they serve and to make better decisions in general - there have been a multitude of studies that show that better decisions are made with diverse groups of people.

We are advocating for three things:

  1. Greater numbers of women in politics
  2. Inclusion (having a voice at the table)
  3. Belonging (having that voice heard and valued at the table)

The lack of women in politics is a complex problem and can be attributed to the many unique barriers that women experience - institutional and systemic discrimination and bias compounded by historical inequities and amplified by other intersectional factors such as, race, ethnicity, ability, age, income, sexuality, location, culture, religion, etc… We will expand on these barriers and share stories in a future blog posts.

We believe that through Madame Premier we can contribute to achieving our goals through our efforts to give back to local non-profit and charitable organizations. Sarah and I believe that we have a responsibility to give back to local organizations conducting invaluable gender equality work that are often under-resourced, under-funded and under-recognized. A portion of every item purchased will be donated to local Calgary non-profit or charitable organizations that advance and support gender equality for women and girls. We are currently donating $1 from every item sold, however we hope to expand our business and look forward to donating more in the near future.

We have had over 300 male Prime Ministers and Premiers in Canada and only 12 have been women (11 Premiers and 1 Prime Minister). We have incorporated feminism in our designs to specifically spark conversations on the lack of self-identified women in all of their diversity in politics and encourage allies to also wear these items. Feminism is inherently political as politics focuses on systems of power and privilege in our society, government and law. And, feminism focuses on achieving equality in economic, social, cultural and political aspects of society. We believe in equality. Equality refers to “the equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities of women and men and girls and boys. Equality does not mean that women and men will become the same but that women’s and men’s rights, responsibilities and opportunities will not depend on whether they are born male or female.” (UN Women. Gender Equality Glossary. 2017)

We believe in a multi-pronged approach to achieving gender equality that involves not only the business community (like us); increasing the number of women in leadership positions, around decision-making tables and in politics and government (like our mission); and, to work in collaboration with complementary non-profit and charitable organizations (where our donations go). Academia, political parties and the general public must also be involved.

To achieve movement on this issue, we want to provide you with extremely comfortable and high-quality clothing to spark mainstream dialogue and encourage positive action, as well as donate a portion of our sales to charities working hard to move the dial on this issue. In doing this, along with action by all other players in the ‘system,’ we hope to help people understand not only the barriers that women experience when running for politics and inspire others to take positive action to make politics more women and family-friendly, and also to understand that diversity leads to better decisions, better policies and better services from our government at all levels.

If you are an organization that supports women and girls and are interested in collaborating, please contact us at We would love to hear from you!
